With summer around the corner (hopefully), I thought I would inspire my fellow fashion lovers to try something new this season.  How about sporting a headpiece by the Toronto-based brand Crowns by Caleigh?  Most of us are probably not brave enough to wear one but from personal experience, once you try one of Caleigh Rykiss’ crowns, you will wonder why you did not sooner.

Caleigh Rykiss not only designs these one-of-a-kind crowns but she is also a producer of CTV’s The Social.  Before meeting the multi-talented and faceted designer, I had the pleasure of being a part of the studio audience and after meeting Caleigh; I could see her spirit in the show.  She is radiant, confident, intelligent, stylish and witty.

Approximately ten years ago, Caleigh accepted an internship at FLARE and it was during this period that her love for fashionable-headwear blossomed.  “I started wearing vintage pieces to work every day and anything I could fascine to my head, I would”.  Then, she turned to designing her own items because what she was looking for was not available in stores.  “I would wear them to work and people would ask, could I have one? At first, I thought, no, get your own crown.  Then, my best friend suggested that I should design and sell them to friends and co-workers”.  Caleigh loved the creation process so much that this thought never crossed her mind.  She always did it for the love of crowns and still does.

From making them for friends, she crossed over to the bridal market.  She never saw herself doing any sort of nuptial-look because when it comes to a wedding day ensemble, most people are generic.  Caleigh took this as an opportunity to bring a unique quality to the women that did not want to be the cookie-cutter bride.

One of my favorite perks about my job is meeting different designers and finding their niche.  Caleigh has a rare gift; she can interact with someone, even a woman covered with tattoos and create a crown that suits them.  Not only reflects their personality but also, the edgier customer that was originally a skeptic, adores their crown and cannot wait to wear and show it off.  The personal relationship between Caleigh and her client is vital to her.  She ensures that the creation of an individual’s crown is a collaborative one.  Her brand’s philosophy is finding the perfect crown for the perfect event that suits one’s own personal style.  “Being a part of someone’s life in that small way means a lot to me.  Whether it is a wedding, prom or a gift to oneself, being a part of someone’s special moment is meaningful to me”.

For those that are hesitant about wearing a crown, you must try it on.  It is just like trying on a dress; you will not really know how you feel about it until you put it on.  Caleigh was very thoughtful to give me one.  She took the time to research what I looked like and made sure the piece suited my features (thank you).  You would think as someone who has never rocked any sort of crown or elaborate headpiece that I would feel uncomfortable or a tad insecure but it actually gave me a boost of confidence.  Caleigh suggested for those who are not sure, to a start with a beginner-piece that could be made with a thin and muted band and simple daisies.  Most importantly, there is a creation for everyone, every budget and it is rare that any two crowns would ever look alike.

What is next for Caleigh? “For my fall 2014 collection, I want to incorporate leather and feathers”.  If any brand can create such a look and make it work, it would be Crowns by Caleigh.
